5 myths about laser hair removal debunked

It's the A-list favourite for eliminating unwanted hair, so what's holding you back? We reveal the key myths around this aesthetic treatment

How much do you really know about laser hair removal? More people than ever are investing in this long-term hair removal solution, including celebrities a-plenty.

Did you know, an average bikini wax every month from age 18 to 50 would mean spending around £10,000 on your bikini area alone? That’s not to mention what you’ll spend on razors.

Statistics released by ALMA Lasers reveal women will spend 1,286 hours of their life shaving, resulting in an eye-watering £17,000 spent in their lifetime on razors and shaving creams/ gels etc. That’s the equivalent to 53 and a half days shaving!

With laser hair removal being a safe, fast and effective treatment for permanent hair reduction and becoming more affordable than ever, it really is an investment. It’s also better for the environment because disposable wax and razors all have a negative impact.

We’ve teamed up with Magdalena Ksiazek, EF Medispa Therapist and Trainer to debunk the most common misconceptions about laser hair removal.

Myth 1: It's painful

“Laser hair removal, however scary it sounds, is surprisingly not painful. However, with many people experiencing different sensations and having varying pain thresholds, it is difficult to distinguish between each individual and what they will experience with the treatment. Many say the first time is the worst. The majority only experience a tingling sensation. Laser hair removal does not hurt more than waxing as the procedure is spread out over several sessions. It is safer and quicker than waxing and does not cause bleeding.”

Myth 2: It takes too long to treat

“It only takes 6-8 treatments at most, which rids you of around 90 per cent of all your unwanted hair – usually patients are advised to repeat their sessions every 6-8 weeks. This means you will be finished within a few months.”

Myth 3: It’s not safe

“Laser hair removal treatment uses a laser that attracts to the pigments in the hair follicles, which means the laser only targets the hair follicle and nothing else. This leaves the surrounding tissue unharmed and has been used safely on millions of clients. Many studies also back up the safe nature of laser hair removal. As long as you use a qualified clinic with proper technicians and treatments, there is no risk.”

Myth 4: It isn’t permanent

It’s true that not all laser treatments are created equal, so it’s important to invest in one that delivers the results. “Soprano Titanium laser hair removal incorporates 3D laser technology to remove excessive or unwanted hair without damaging the surrounding skin tissue. We usually see results in our patients after the third treatment. After six treatments you can expect to see around a 90 per cent reduction in hair regrowth. Results will vary on your hair type, colour and the phase of your hair growth during treatments. Hormonal influences are another variable to consider. The advanced Soprano Titanium laser safely damages the hair follicle, leading to a reduction in the number of hairs per cm2. Furthermore, ICE cooling prevents burns and provides pain-free treatment.”

Myth 5: It's not suitable for darker skins

“Although laser hair removal takes the headache out of home hair removal options such as shaving, bleaching and even waxing, not all devices are suitable for skin of colour or tanned skin. Take the time to research which devices are suitable for darker skin tones/ dark hair. Soprano Titanium hair removal is quick, easy and pain-free and is also perfect for all skin types and skin of colour, including tanned skin in summer. Also, as it is non-ablative there is no risk of hyperpigmentation.”
