This year's most searched for skincare ingredients are revealed

These are the trending skincare ingredients for 2023 and possibly even 2024 – is one of your favourites on the list?

What's your go-to skincare formula? Are you religious when it comes to retinol, or is hyaluronic acid your absolute must-have?

The most sought-after skincare ingredients have been revealed, with ‘vitamin C skincare’ taking the number one spot with 8.3k Google searches a month on average, according to digital marketing agency, Foundation.

Taking second and third place are ‘retinol skincare’ and ‘niacinamide skincare’, with 5k and 3k searches each month, respectively.

Foundation also analysed which ingredients had also seen the biggest growths this quarter to predict which ingredients will be trending over winter.

‘Peptide skincare’ has nearly tripled in searches, seeing a 177 per cent growth this quarter, while searches for ‘jojoba oil skincare’ and ‘niacinamide skincare’ have also doubled over the same period of time.

These sudden jumps in searches show that these ingredients and products will continue to be on the radar for skincare fanatics this winter.

The top five most searched-for ingredients, with their average monthly search volumes, are:

  • Vitamin C - 8.3k
  • Retinol - 5k
  • Niacinamide - 2.9k
  • Vitamin E - 2k
  • Hyaluronic acid - 1.5k
AYU Cosmetics Founder and leading Irish Makeup Artist, Suzie O’Neill, discusses the benefits of each ingredient:

Vitamin C
“Renowned for its brightening and antioxidant properties, vitamin C can help reduce the appearance of dark spots, promote collagen production for improved skin elasticity, and provide protection against environmental damage.”

EV tip: Ensure your vitamin C is stored in a dark or opaque bottle to protect against oxidation.

Retinol
“Considered the gold standard when it comes to anti-ageing, retinol aids in reducing fine lines, improving skin texture, and enhancing overall skin tone.”

EV tip: Those new to retinol should go slowly and gently at the start, as it can irritate skin.

Niacinamide
“This multitasking ingredient can address a variety of skin concerns, such as helping to regulate oil production, providing relief for those with combination or oily skin.”

EV tip: We rate niacinamide for its gentle, well tolerated formula which pairs perfectly with sensitive or reactive skin.

Vitamin E
“A powerful antioxidant, vitamin E helps combat free radicals that can prematurely age your skin, offering a shield against environmental damage.”

EV tip: Topical vitamin E can help alleviate UV-induced skin swelling.

Hyaluronic Acid
“Your skin’s hydration hero, hyaluronic acid attracts and retains moisture in the skin, resulting in a gorgeously plump, well-hydrated complexion.”

EV tip: Applying hyaluronic acid to damp skin will help improve absorption.
