Glutathione
Glutathione is an antioxidant that’s found in animals, plants and even in humans. It’s made up of collagen nurturing amino acids: glycine, glutamate and cysteine, but sadly as we age our reserves decline. Like all antioxidants it helps protect skin from free radical damage that causes premature ageing internally and externally. And it’s believed that lower glutathione, directly equates to more visible signs of ageing – think lines, wrinkles, sagging and thinning skin – due to the lack of collagen that ensues. When it comes to skincare buys glutathione is becoming increasingly popular, as along with its collagen sustaining properties, it works as a tyrosinase inhibiter i.e., it blocks the over production of melanin to even out skin tone. It also, protects the skin against environmental aggressors like pollution, UV exposure, and cigarette smoke – to ensure cells are functioning at their best. Not to mention like most antioxidants it has anti-inflammatory abilities which is great for those with acne, or rosacea, and it’s a gentle active that can be used on the most sensitive skin types – we told you it’s a winner!
Ectoin
Another amino acid, ectoin can be found within bacteria, which if you’re up a skin science swat you’ll know that bacteria isn’t bad after all. In fact this amino acid is mega resilient as it actually ensures cells function how nature intended even in extreme weather conditions. When it comes to the skin this impressive protector helps keep skin hydrated by forming protective ‘shells’ around cells, enzymes and proteins. By reducing water loss and keeping skin hydrated this active allows skin to stay well moisturised, resulting in a plump, smooth complexion.
What’s more it stops things getting in too – so cell damage from environmental aggressors like UVA and pollutants is greatly reduced. Plus, studies have shown that this topical skincare ingredient can help even skin tone, tighten pores, and support the skin barrier.
Alpha-arbutin
Found in bearberry plants, mulberry and pomegranates this active is taking the beauty world by storm especially since the controversy that surrounds hydroquinone has unfolded. Namely that it’s been banned in Africa, Japan and the EU, as well as declared carcinogenic by the FDA.Like hydroquinone its works to even out skin tone, waving goodbye to melasma and hyperpigmentation, but without irritating the skin, making it sensitive to sunlight or causing pigmentation issues of its own.
How? Well, alpha-arbutin is a derivative of hydroquinone, and slowly releases the stuff over time to inhibit the overproduction of melanin. Less melanin means less pigmentation and a more even skin tone, add to the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of this active keep skin looking youthful for longer.
