Everything you need to know about chin filler, from why it's so popular and who would benefit from it, to how and where exactly it's placed
Scientifically proven to be the most visually attractive face shape, the most prominent feature of a heart shaped, or V-shaped face as it’s commonly referred to, is a slightly pointed chin.
And where
dermal filler was once used solely for
plumping lips and filling lines, in recent years
facial contouring (the ability to sculpt the face by reshaping areas – adding definition and replacing volume) has really taken off.
Placing dermal filler in the chin (in conjunction with the jawline and cheeks in some) can help create that coveted heart shaped face for women, while for anyone with a ‘weak’ short retracted chin, filler can help define the lower third of the face offering a more chiselled profile, reducing double chins, stopping the nose from looking bigger than it is, and making
jowls less prominent.
Plus, for those who have orange peel-esque, pebbled skin caused by ageing, sun exposure and smoking – this can also be tweaked and youth-boosted with filler.
What is chin filler?
Chin filler is essentially dermal filler injected into the chin. Most dermal fillers are made from
hyaluronic acid, but the density of the filler depends on how the HA particles are linked. Density matters as different levels work best in different areas of the face. For the chin and
jawline thicker fillers like Juvederm Volux Juvéderm Ultra XC or Restylane Lyft are favoured; they are ideal for creating structure as they aren't malleable and stay where they're strategically placed.
Where exactly is it placed?
Exact treatment areas are decided case by case, but the areas of the chin that are usually injected are directly on the underside to elongate and define, the sides of the chin and sometimes the lateral jawline in order to support the jowls and smooth and tighten the side profile. Filler can also be injected on the front of the chin to fill out dimples or pebbled skin.
Who would benefit from chin filler?
Anyone who has a short, retracted chin and wants to add definition to their jawline, and/or who wants to make their chin more pronounced in order to achieve the coveted heart shaped face will benefit from this treatment. Those who have noticed a change in their jawline – namely
bone loss – will also benefit. This is because with age, bone regenerating cells decrease, leading to the degradation of the bones in the face – receding the chin, flattening the
cheeks, hollowing the
eyes and a jutting down of the jaw. Dermal filler in the chin will help restore what once was adding structure, and tightening the skin. Then of course anyone who wants to smooth and tighten the skin in the lower third of their face, soften or define their chin/jawline.
Is the procedure painful?
While everyone tolerates pain differently, the treatment isn’t considered painful at all. Plus, numbing cream is usually applied to the chin before injecting begins. People tend to feel a sharp scratch followed by a light pressure while the filler is injected.
What to expect post treatment?
Results are instantaneous and generally last around a year or more (depending on the filler used). There is no real downtime, but there may be swelling and bruising to contend with over the course of a week.
Are there any risks?
Generally dermal filler treatments don’t pose many major risks, however lumps can form (which can be
dissolved), and it's unlikely, but your blood vessels could be accidentally injected which can lead to skin death (necrosis). This is why who you choose to book in with is important. Medical professionals like our
EV Experts who have plenty of aesthetic medicine and dermal filler injecting experience should be your go-to practitioners.
