The no-knife necklifts to know about

Today's tweakments can take years off your neck, with doctors layering procedures for optimum results

Afraid to go under the knife but hate your saggy, loose neck? Neck issues affect us all eventually and if you’ve ever stood in front of the mirror pulling up the skin of your neck and contemplating how much better you look, you'll be interested in our no-knife, no-surgery solutions.

Non-invasive and minimally invasive treatments can take 10 to 15 years off your neck, with doctors often using a clever layered approach of injectables, ultrasound and radiofrequency.

Ultrasound treatment

More commonly known as Ultherapy, ultrasound energy can treat a sagging neck and jowls by using an FDA-approved technology to tighten and lift.

It does this by using a focused beam of ultrasound energy aimed at the collagen in the deeper layers of the skin – as deep as the SMAS (Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System) layer—the layer of muscular tissue in the face and neck that surgeons tighten during a facelift.

This causes the collagen to contract and tighten, therefore lifting the whole area while also stimulating new collagen and elastin.

Treatments take about half and hour and only one treatment is needed. An immediate tightening will be visible, though it’ll take three months to see an overall improvement.

Radiofrequency

Great for treating crepey skin on the neck and face, radiofrequency energy heats the deeper layer of the skin (the dermis) without damaging the top layer.

This stimulates collagen to tighten and firm the skin. Treatments will feel hot but not uncomfortable and take about 30 minutes, with the only downtime being a little redness for up to 24 hours.

Over the following weeks skin will continue to tighten—after three-to-six months, skin will become even firmer, with increased hydration and a reduction in lines.

Practitioners usually recommend six to 12 treatments for the best result.

Anti-wrinkle injections

Older necks tend to get thinner as we usually lose fat from this part of the body as we age; this can make the tendons stand out like cords, and  happens because the muscles on the front of the neck (the platysmas muscles) become too taut.

By treating them with anti-wrinkle injections—botulinum toxin (Botox being the most well-known brand) —they will relax and the neck will look less tense.

Injectable anti-wrinkle treatments involve a small amount of toxin being injected into specific areas of the neck to weaken muscle movement.

This prevents the muscles from forming wrinkles by contracting and bulging to give a 'turkey' or 'stringy neck' look.

Injectable moisturisers

Injectable moisturisers such as Profhilo can make a marked and immediate improvement in the skin texture on the neck.

Profhilo, which contains a thicker form of hyaluronic acid, acts like an internal layer of moisturiser as it is brilliant at holding onto water, encouraging cell regeneration within the skin.

Two treatments two weeks apart are usually recommended; the procedure involves a series of small injections to place the Profhilo just under the skin.

Necks will look considerably smoother almost instantly, while skin will be firmer and less lined. These effects will continue to increase over the course of two months as skin becomes fresher and firmer.
