The EV guide to Sculptra

Everything you need to know about the trending biostimulator treatment that stimulates collagen and improves skin quality

Where the focus was once predominantly on dermal filler and anti-wrinkle injections like botulinum toxin, the types of injectable aesthetic treatments patients seek has diversified significantly in the past decade or two. Now, options such as polynucleotides, Julaine and Sculptra are all the more popular among those seeking skin rejuvenation and longevity.

Though it has been around for more than two decades, Sculptra in particular has seen a surge in interest in the past year or two. So, how does it work, how is it different from ‘traditional’ filler, and how long are results likely to last? Here, an Etre Vous Expert breaks down everything to know about this injectable.

What is Sculptra?

“Sculptra is an injectable treatment made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible and biodegradable substance that has been safely used in medicine for decades,” explains Dr Raquel Amado, EV Expert, Aesthetic Practitioner and Founder of Skin & Medical Cosmetics.

Rather than adding physical volume to the skin in the way that traditional dermal fillers do, it is classed as a collagen stimulator or biostimulator. “Once injected, Sculptra triggers the skin’s natural processes, encouraging the gradual production of new collagen,” Dr Amado continues. “Over time, this rebuilds structural support in the skin, improving firmness, volume, and overall skin quality from within.”

What are the benefits of Sculptra?

Dr Amado notes that the key benefits of Sculptra are restoration of lost facial volume and structure, plus improved elasticity and thickness. It improves the skin gradually for more natural-looking end results, avoiding the “overfilled” look of some injectables, and instead creating a more refreshed appearance.

“Because the results develop slowly, Sculptra is often favoured by those seeking subtle rejuvenation rather than noticeable change,” she adds. These results also tend to last longer than those of dermal fillers.

“The most significant difference between Sculptra and traditional dermal fillers lies in how results are achieved," Dr Amado explains. "Hyaluronic acid fillers deliver immediate volume and are often used to contour specific features such as the lips, jawline, or under-eye hollows. Sculptra, on the other hand, does not provide instant plumping. Instead, it works progressively, strengthening the skin’s framework over weeks and months.”

How long do results take to develop?

As mentioned, this isn’t a treatment from which you’ll see immediate benefits, as Sculptra takes a while to improve your skin. “Patience is essential with Sculptra,” Dr Amado stresses. “While some patients may notice early improvements within four to six weeks, the true transformation happens at three to six months.”

How many treatments are required, and how long do results last?

You’ll most likely need a course of several treatments, rather than just one session. “Most patients require two to three treatment sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart,” Dr Amado confirms. “The number of sessions depends on the degree of volume loss, skin condition and individual collagen response.”

Your chosen practitioner will be able to assess your skin at your initial consultation and decide if you are a suitable candidate, and if so, how many sessions you’ll need for the best possible results.

After a course of treatments, the outlook is positive. “Once results are fully established, they are impressively long-lasting,” says Dr Amado. “Many patients enjoy the benefits for two to three years.”

Who is Sculptra best suited to?

As we’ve already touched on, Sculptra’s main benefit is about restoring lost volume and structure. “It is particularly well suited to patients experiencing age-related volume loss, or the early structural changes that occur as collagen production declines,” says Dr Amado. She adds that it’s most often used to treat hollow or flattened cheeks, jawline softening, volume loss at the temples and general facial thinning.

“The treatment is also popular among patients seeking a preventative approach to ageing, helping to maintain facial structure before more significant volume loss occurs,” she continues. “Many choose Sculptra because it offers subtle rejuvenation, creating a refreshed and well-rested appearance rather than an obviously treated look.”

When might a different treatment be a better option?

Aesthetic treatments target a variety of different concerns and all have their own limitations. “Despite its versatility, Sculptra is not the ideal choice for everyone,” Dr Amado confirms. “Patients seeking immediate results or same-day volume enhancement may find other injectable treatments more appropriate.

“It is also less suitable for precise contouring of small areas, such as the lips, or for the correction of very superficial or fine wrinkles, as well as deep volume replacement,” she continues. “In these cases, traditional hyaluronic acid fillers are often preferred, particularly when instant results, detailed shaping or reversibility are important considerations.”

Who is not suitable for Sculptra?

Again, as with most aesthetic treatments, there are some contraindications. “Sculptra should not be used in patients with active skin infections at the treatment site, or in those with a known hypersensitivity to poly-L-lactic acid,” confirms Dr Amado. “Caution is also advised for individuals with certain autoimmune or connective tissue disorders, and the treatment is generally avoided during pregnancy or breastfeeding as a precaution.

As goes for absolutely any procedure, it’s crucial the person treating you is qualified, experienced and insured and works in a sterile, clinical setting. “As Sculptra requires careful placement and expert technique, a thorough consultation with an experienced practitioner is essential to determine suitability and minimise the risk of complications such as nodules or uneven results,” Dr Amado stresses.
