Earlobe filler: is it something to consider?

An expert explains why this type of filler could be the rejuvenating treatment you never knew you needed

Thanks to the wonders of aesthetic medicine, you can now rejuvenate most parts of your body, but have you considered your ears? I'd never really paid much attention to mine till fairly recently, when I bought a pair of earrings which were a little weighty, and dragged my lobes down further than I liked.

It's often said that our ears never stop growing, but there isn't solid truth to this. Actually, our ears do change as we get older but this is due to gravity and changing effects to the skin. As we age, we know collagen depletion occurs, but one area we aren't giving any ear-time to is our earlobes.

As I'm now discovering (and I didn't wear earrings for years as I was convinced my piercing holes had healed up), years of wearing heavy/big earrings or a high quantity of ear piercings, and not wearing SPF on your ears, in combination with natural collagen loss, can cause droopy, stretched, thin and wrinkly/creased earlobes.

Our ears are often neglected, but the skin on the ear is the same as everywhere else. So, what can we do to rejuvenate them to keep them looking plump and youthful? Leading Aesthetic Doctor and Teoxane Global KOL, Dr. Wassim Taktouk, gives us the lowdown:

"Much like the face and neck, depletion of collagen and elastin can cause the earlobes to deflate and even sometimes shrivel up, as well as sag over time. An earlobe rejuvenation treatment restores volume and shape to the lobe through filler, and also addresses skin laxity and prevents ripping where ears are pierced. Rejuvenation with dermal filler will also support with re-inflating the earlobe so may help boost confidence in showing your ears, if it's something you're conscious of.

"I like to use Teoxane RHA 2 for this treatment, as it is a dymamic hyaluronic-acid based dermal filler, and is particularly good for skin folds like the earlobe area, wrinkles, nasolabial folds and glabellar lines. Teoxane is the first and only hyaluronic acid filler brand specifically designed to respect facial dynamics, which means the treatment results are super natural-looking through these smart, complex HA chains that do not break down as the face moves.

"For the lobes, the filler is injected in small amounts to areas where extra support is required. This injectable treatment addresses creases and drooping instantly. Earlobe rejuvenation takes around 30 minutes to perform and results, which are immediate, can last anywhere from 18 to 24 months depending on the quantity of filler used, and how quickly your body metabolises hyaluronic acid.

"The longevity of the filler treatment can vary in duration depending on how you care for your ears post treatment, as well as your genetic collagen level loss. Avoiding smoking, sun exposure and drinking excessive alcohol can all impact the efficacy of the results."
