Navigating your skin through life’s hormonal changes can feel like a full-time job. From the first fine lines of your 30s to the transformative shifts of menopause, our skin is constantly changing. It may feel daunting, but it doesn't have to be. To help decode what’s really happening beneath the surface, Dr Aiza Jamil, Consultant Dermatologist at SK:N Clinics, shares her expert guidance on how to care for your skin at every age. Her practical, realistic advice for those in their 30s, 40s and 50s, combines dermatological science with a holistic approach to wellbeing
In your 30s: Prevention and early intervention
The first signs of ageing can begin to appear during this decade, as collagen production starts to slow and lifestyle stressors take their toll. Dr Aiza explains: “Prevention is key in your 30s. Daily SPF should be non-negotiable, and introducing antioxidants like vitamin C helps to combat early oxidative stress and dullness.”She also recommends gentle exfoliation and consistent hydration to maintain glow and texture. For those noticing early textural changes, collagen-boosting treatments such as microneedling can help to keep the skin smooth and resilient.
Hormones also start to shift. “We often see women in their 30s experiencing subtle hormonal fluctuations that can affect skin and hair,” Dr Aiza notes. “Balancing stress, nutrition, and sleep is just as important as any topical product.”
Her top tip: “Consider injectable hydrators like Profhilo, which improve elasticity and radiance by stimulating collagen and hyaluronic acid production from within.”
In your 40s: Repair and hormonal balance
As oestrogen levels begin to decline, skin can feel drier, thinner and less elastic. “Hydration becomes your best friend in your 40s,” says Dr Aiza. “Switch to richer creams and hydrating serums that reinforce the skin barrier.”Fine lines and pigmentation become more visible, making non-invasive treatments an effective way to refresh the complexion. “Dermal fillers can restore lost volume and balance facial contours, while botulinum toxin softens fine lines and supports a more rested look,” she explains. “Chemical peels are another excellent way to even skin tone and refine texture.”
Beyond skincare, the 40s can bring changes to sleep, energy and metabolism. Dr Aiza advises prioritising movement and stress management, which directly benefit hormone and skin health. Her go-to tip: “Treatments such as HarmonyCa provide subtle lift and firmness without surgery, helping women feel more like themselves again.”
In your 50s: Support and adaptation
The menopause transition can accelerate collagen loss and change the skin’s structure entirely. “Post-menopausal skin needs deeper nourishment and professional guidance,” says Dr Aiza. “We focus on hydration, barrier repair and maintaining firmness through treatments like energy-based CO2RE laser and chemical peels.”Uneven tone and dryness are common concerns, but they can be managed effectively. “Chemical peels smooth rough patches and boost radiance, while fillers and lasers restore structure,” she adds.
Holistic health plays a defining role during this phase. “Nutrition, strength training and cardiovascular activity are crucial for maintaining circulation and collagen health,” Dr Aiza emphasises. “Where appropriate, hormone therapy can also make a positive difference, but it should always be discussed with a medical specialist.”
Her final advice: “Think holistically. Combine tailored aesthetic treatments with intensive hydration and lifestyle balance for stronger, brighter skin that reflects how you feel inside.”
