Supercharged health and beauty benefits in a glass

The lowdown on liquid immunity: how to quench your thirst while supercharging your immune system and beauty regime

With six in 10 global consumers looking to food and drink items to help boost their immune system*, brands have good reason to create drinkable products that support overall health.

The liquid immunity trend has also been highlighted as one to watch in Wunderman Thompson’s The Future 100: 2022 report.

Harnessing the power of the microalgae spirulina, Netherlands-based Ful Foods launched its range of Ful Revive vitamin-rich drinks in the UK in autumn 2021.

The drinks’ distinctive blue colour comes from the phycocyanin natural antioxidant found in spirulina, which is renowned for its immune-boosting properties.

US food and drinks brand Ocean Spray is also looking to health-first options: in November 2020 the company launched the B1U functional-beverage brand, which includes a lemon and chamomile-infused water called I Need Immunity.

Going beyond beverages, the brand followed up in March 2021 with Ocean Spray Fruit Medley, a new line of dried-fruit blends with key benefits. The Immunity Blend contains beta glucan, which has been shown to improve immune defence.

As continued focus on illness prevention drives growth in the global immunity-boosting food market— in fact it’s set to grow at a CAGR of 8.2 per cent from 2021 to 2028, according to Stratagem Market Insights— immunity-assisting drinks are a new focus for innovation.

The beauty sector is also jumping on the bandwagon, with a plethora of drinkable supplements designed to have profound benefits on your skin, hair, nails and even gums.

So what’s available and more to the point, what actually works? We round up some of our favourite immune and beauty-boosting drinks and supplements.

Altrient Liposomal Vitamin C (shop.dermoi.com)

Loved by beauty editors, celebrities and health gurus alike, award-winning Altrient contains liposomal vitamin C which has far higher absorption into the cells than non-liposomal forms of the vitamin. This means you get superior support for a normally functioning immune and nervous system, while protecting cells from oxidative stress, reducing tiredness and fatigue, and promoting normal collagen formation for skin, cartilage, gums, teeth, bones and blood vessels. Can you afford to be without it?

Skinade Derma Defense A&D Boost (skinade.com)

While Skinade is not officially aimed at immune boosting, we believe it deserves a mention due to the inclusion of high-grade vitamin D, ‘the sunshine vitamin’, which, in combination with vitamin A, shields, rejuvenates and repairs skin from the inside out. Also addressing autoimmunity, the liquid formulation promotes high absorption and bioavailability for optimal results.

Gusto Super DC Blackcurrant & Elderberry (drinkgusto.com)

Containing high strength and immune supporting vitamins D3 and C with vitamins A, K, folic acid, zinc and extracts of black elderberry, white mulberry and acerola cherry, this canned drink helps fight free radicals while boosting energy and helping keep your immune system in optimal condition. It’s also free from refined sugar, preservatives and artificial sweeteners.

Symprove (symprove.com)

The gut microbiome affects the body from birth and throughout your life by supporting processes such as the functioning of the immune and central nervous systems. Symprove is packed full of live, active bacteria and because it’s water based, doesn’t trigger digestion – more live and active bacteria surviving passage through the stomach means a better opportunity to colonise the gut. Along with four carefully selected strains of live bacteria, ingredients include extract of germinated barley, sodium citrate, potassium sorbet and vitamin C.

Dr David Jack SkinShake (drdavidjack.com)

Possibly the most delicious liquid supplement, SkinShake contains hemp and pea protein, superfoods, super greens, peptides, antioxidants including glutathione and vitamin C, and plant-based food powders including matcha, chlorella, chia, wheatgrass and green kale powder. The vanilla-flavoured skin, hair and nail-boosting formula supplies cells with everything they need, supporting regeneration and repair.

Dr Nigma Talib ND Vitamin C Cocktail (cultbeauty.co.uk)

Los Angeles-based Dr Nigma Talib is a naturopathic doctor and author of multiple books. Blending a wealth of vital nutrients, this vegan powder is designed to keep your skin, cardiovascular system and liver in tip-top condition, while supporting a healthy immune system.
