Tweakment trends guide: what you are likely to be booking in for in 2022

The biggest aesthetics trends to watch out for, compiled by industry leading doctors and skin gurus

No makeup makeup

One thing the experts all agree on is that 2022 will see an increase in the ‘no makeup makeup look’ – natural tweakments that leave us looking ‘done but not overdone’. There will be less of a focus on tweaking our facial features (with things like lip filler and facial contouring) and more of a spotlight on perfecting our overall canvas; the complexion.

"2022 is all about great skin," confirms Dr Helen Whyte, WOW Facial Key Opinion Leader (KOL) and Aesthetic Doctor. "2022 is set to bring about the year of the glow, the ‘natural' radiance. We saw many people, including celebrities, dissolving their fillers in 2021 to make their appearance more natural.”

"I think we can all agree that celebrities look amazing, but they aren’t without their tweakments," Dr Helen tells us. "Mesotherapy is going to be huge. These kinds of solutions can be tailored to meet individual skin concerns and delivered exactly where you need them – directly into the skin – thus helping to resolve redness, oily skin, acne, scarring, ageing and giving a beautiful glow.”

Dr David Jack, InMode KOL and Aesthetic Doctor, adds, “Having good skin and a filter-free appearance on social media will be the goal in 2022, particularly following the backlash against celebrities and influencers using apps like Facetune. I think the overdone appearance will continue to become unfashionable, with a more refined look taking its place.”

Radio frequency face and body treatments such as Morpheus8 aren’t going anywhere – the pandemic has meant we’ve had lots more time to do our research on skin health, treatments that really achieve results and with us working from home, any treatments with downtime or redness associated with them are much easier to work into our schedules.

Combination treatments

This is all about marrying popular tweakment procedures, techniques and technology for super-charged results.

Dr  Jack predicts, "Combination treatments (e.g. Morpheus8 teamed with Profhilo, Nucleofil with Sunekos) will definitely become more popular in 2022. On this theme, I believe general skin health and wellness will continue to be important; as well as a more sustainable approach to skincare and supplements."

Oksana Georgia-M, Senior Aesthetician and skin guru seconds Dr Jack's views on combination treatments. "When it comes to predicting tweakments that'll be big in 2022, combination treatments are an obvious choice and promote unique and personalised results for patients. A fantastic combination treatment I'm predicting will be a big hit is Morpheus8 teamed with Profhilo. Morpheus8 combines microneedling with radio frequency (RF) energy.

“Radio frequency has been scientifically proven to stimulate collagen production," Oksana explains, "and microneedling creates tiny puncture wounds to promote a healing response – the production of collagen, elastin and new skin cells. Morpheus8 is ideal for scar reduction and skin tightening, fine lines and wrinkles and general skin tone.

"To enhance the results of your Morpheus8 treatment, to see an improvement in skin tone quicker and to really rejuvenate ageing skin, performing a Profhilo treatment to the treated area following your Morpheus8 session is perfect," she continues.

"An application of Profhilo to the same area will create a firmer, more hydrated complexion; actually rebuilding new, younger-looking skin cells. Profhilo uses pure hyaluronic acid that releases slowly to stimulate collagen and elastin in the skin.”

Health-focussed tweakments

Treatments such as Vitamin IV drips and fitness technology are predicted to be big as a result of the past two pandemic-filled years, and an increased awareness of keeping ourselves healthy.

"Vitamin and IV infusions are bound to become an increasingly popular treatment for people looking to take care of their immune systems and wanting to feel their best, as we step into a new phase of this pandemic," EV Expert Dr Ioannis Liakas, Medical Director at Vie Aesthetics, tells us.

"Supplements and internal skincare is becoming more popular as people want to improve not only their skin health, but their immune system as well.," he continues. "Wellness supplements are bound to be a hit in 2022.”

Dr Jack predicts we’ll also continue to see a rise in at-home treatment technology – agreeing that body contouring and other more health focussed tweakments are here to stay.

“Body contouring and post-pregnancy treatments will continue to increase in popularity and skincare/supplements for peri- and post-menopause will continue their exponential rise," he predicts.  "Likewise, more advanced at-home treatments and gadgets will come to market to help augment in-clinic results.”

The eyes

There will be a continued interest in treatments addressing the area around the eyes, as our lower faces are set to once again be hidden by masks for the foreseeable future.

"Mask wearing has fuelled high demand for procedures around the eyes," reveals Dr Liakas. "Even if the vaccine eradicates Covid-19, mask wearing could be long term. When wearing a mask, you can only see the upper third of the face, so a lot of treatments today focus on the eyes; for example, the “fox eye” thread lift which creates an almond-shaped appearance.

"That isn't to say that people do not want to address the lower face," Dr Liakas continues. "Zoom and other virtual platforms are thought to have driven demand for aesthetic fixes for the lower third of the face and neck as well. In essence, the pandemic has spiked demand for facial aesthetic procedures.

"Skincare for below the nose (maskne) and aesthetics treatments above nose (i.e. toxin for forehead, thread lifts for lifting eyes and tear trough for under eye bags) will continue to have their day. I also think that dermal fillers for the body will become increasingly more common, much like lip fillers once did at the start of their prime.

"Some fillers are now becoming so advanced that they are permitting use on the body as well as the face, like Lanluma for example.”
