Ferulic acid: the lesser-known active with short and long-term benefits

We round up five skin transforming serums for you to incorporate into your skincare regime, no matter what your skin type

Have you heard of ferulic acid? With antioxidant power, this skincare active which comes from the cell walls of plants helps to smooth fine lines, work on hyperpigmentation and diffuse skin inflammation.

It can also help protect skin from the effects of damaging free radicals such as UV rays and pollution, which in turn can cause premature ageing.

And that’s not all, says Cosmetic Dentist and Advanced Facial Aesthetician Dr Tara Francis: ”This lesser-known ingredient also optimises the effectiveness of other antioxidants you may apply as part of your skincare regime (such as vitamins A, C and E), meaning it can help supercharge your results and reduce signs of ageing, all while offering protection from future damage,” she says.

So where can you find this antioxidant-rich acid and when should you be using it? “Ferulic acid’s protective, antioxidant properties mean you’ll most commonly find it in anti-ageing products–and most often, in serum form,” says Dr Francis.

“It’s a great choice for those who live in polluted cities, sunny climates and/or are aiming to reduce signs of skin ageing and damage. It’s suitable for all skin types, as it’s not known to cause irritation or sensitivity.”

When adding a new ingredient into your skincare regime, Dr Francis suggests you introduce it gradually and don’t overdo it with acids. And if you’re unsure on how to treat your skin concerns, always consult a skin specialist.

We’ve rounded up some of our favourite serums containing this effective acid, all of which are easy to introduce into your skincare regime.

Garden of Wisdom (GOW) Vitamin C Serum 23% + Ferulic Acid

This non greasy, high potency serum contains 23 per cent L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) to promote a brighter complexion and help prevent the oxidation of melanin (the skin's natural pigment), resulting in clearer, brighter skin. It’s combined with ferulic acid which protects vitamin C against oxidation and destroys the superoxide and hydroxyl radicals, helping to protect against ageing. The result? Brighter, fresher, even-toned and more radiant skin.

Skinceuticals CE Ferulic

This cult product is loved by beauty experts and dermatologists across the planet and with good reason. The award-winning formula includes 15 per cent L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C), vitamin E, and ferulic acid, and has a higher pH level than other serums, meaning it can penetrate the skin without causing irritation. Pricey, but a little goes a long way.

Scientia Notox Youth Boost Eye Serum
